SIZING UP THE ADVANTAGES
Customers’ demands for larger sheet sizes have been fulfilled. Mohawk Fine Papers is now offering the popular 28 x 40 sheet size in Options, Superfine and Navajo product lines.

The 28 x 40 size allows for more positions up on the sheet, and that means less waste because less paper is being trimmed off and thrown away. This makes the press run more efficient and provides significant environmental benefits as well.

Of course, if you’re using less paper, you’re also purchasing less which means more savings for you.

Larger parent sheets can enhance the quality of the printed piece, too, when critical projects require flexibility in press layouts or room for color bars.

To size up the advantages, ask your local sales representative for more information or to request an Options, Superfine or Navajo swatchbook.

CHOOSING YOUR PERSONAL BEST
There are no better examples of the attributes that set Mohawk Navajo and Superfine apart from other premium smooth uncoated papers than our two new promotional books entitled Personal Best.

The design team at Pentagram, New York brought design to a whole new level with this inspiring piece. Taking the “less is more” approach, Pentagram opted to showcase the extraordinary printability of Superfine and Navajo with four-color imagery alone.

The trick was finding the right subject matter. If you could print anything you wanted and knew it would look great, how would you decide what to print?

Pentagram thought about creating a beautiful portfolio of a single photographer's work, but they wanted to raise the bar and challenge themselves to their own personal best.

“We asked people from jazz musician Wynton Marsalis to author Kurt Andersen to humorist Andy Borowitz to motorcycle guru Willie G. Davidson to pick their favorites from a wide range of categories,” said Pentagram designer Michael Bierut.

“When the answers came back, we found ourselves working with subject matter we never would have selected ourselves: pages from rare books from the legendary Ransom Center at the University of Texas; vintage grainy black and white photography from smoky jazz nightclubs; oversaturated comic book illustrations. This let us truly put Superfine and Navajo to the test.”

The result – an eclectic collection ranging from the hyper-sharp color photography of chef Bobby Flay's favorite knife, to the candy colors of illustrator Maira Kalman's favorite artist's tool. The subject matter of each shines brilliantly.

Printed by Blanchette Press and Hennegan, the two Personal Best books clearly illustrate the value of each of these premium papers.

Navajo has a crisp, modern feel, while Superfine lives up to its reputation as the most elegant uncoated text and cover paper in the world. They’re as versatile as the images printed on them.

And now the electricity used to manufacture both grades is offset by clean, renewable, windpower.

MEASURE YOUR RESOLVE
Results … measurable results … not only gauge success, but inspire us to keep going or do even better.

With Mohawk Fine Papers’ Environmental Savings Calculator, you can measure the effects of paper selections on your sustainability goals.

Using paper made with postconsumer recycled fiber and wind-generated electricity rather than virgin fiber and fossil fuel-derived electricity does make a difference.

Simply plug in the answers to five questions to calculate the environmental savings on your next print project. The results are tangible:

- Trees preserved
- Greenhouse gases prevented
- Waterborne waste not created
- Wastewater flow saved
- Solid waste not generated
- BTUs of energy not consumed
- Air emissions not generated
- Cubic feet natural gas not used
- Miles not driven

All of Mohawk’s papers are made with wind-generated electricity. We offer many grades with various levels of postconsumer waste fiber and require our virgin pulp suppliers to follow sound forest stewardship practices.

Calculate all the environmental benefits at www.mohawkpaper.com/environmentalcalculator.

Eco GuideA FRESH APPROACH TO GUIDE YOU
The eco*guide from Mohawk Fine Papers makes it as clear as a bright blue autumn sky: practicing energy conservation and purchasing emission-free energy are fundamental to our environmental stewardship program.

An easy read, the eco*guide’s at-a-glance section quickly displays the environmental goods on all your favorite papers. Is Beckett Concept FSC-certified? What percentage of post-consumer waste fiber is in Mohawk Options? Are Strathmore Writing and Script carbon neutral? You find all that plus Green-e
and Green Seal designations.

If you want crisp, clean explanations of environmental attributes like process chlorine free or carbon neutral, there’s a page for that too.

And to top it off, there are concise descriptions and suggestions on best uses and print characteristics of all our product lines.

Gotta have it? But of course! Go to www.mohawkpaper.com or ask your local paper representative for a copy of the eco*guide.

If the alphabet soup of GHGs, RECs, VERs, CN and climate change in general has you scratching your head, click here to get a little help sorting it out: “The Environment – What It all Means.”

digital news

ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE
To further enhance the advances that Mohawk Fine Papers brings to the marketplace with i-Tone proprietary technology, we have introduced new 19x13 and 13x19 sheet sizes throughout this product offering.

The larger sheet size keeps pace with the latest upgrades in digital presses such as the new HP Indigo 5500, the ImagePress C7000 and the Nexpress M700.

The new sheet sizes translate into greater layout flexibility, less paper waste and more cost savings.

Now printers with multi-platform shops can specify one premium paper that will run both liquid and dry toner with the high performance and quality results that are the hallmarks of the i-Tone product line.

paperspecs webinarLIVE AND LEARN WITH PAPERSPECS
Webinars are a natural outgrowth for PaperSpecs, an online resource providing thousands of graphic designers and print buyers with the latest news, tips and profiles on all things paper.

“Paper can make or break a project,” says PaperSpecs founder Sabine Lenz, “so it’s our job to make sure paper specifiers know fact from myth, have access to the latest paper industry news and promotions, receive timely paper updates as well as useful information on printing technologies and creative inspiration.”

On the heels of its successful environmental Webinar this summer, PaperSpecs recently held a “Designing for Digital” Webinar.

Hosts Tracey Ryan and Joe Marin, both prepress experts at PIA/GATF, tackled topics of interest to attendees:

- Digital printing and how it complements traditional offset;
- Guidelines for choosing the right technology for a project;
- How to select papers for digital print applications; and
- Techniques for “Getting the Results You Want,” from color enhancement to reverse type.

During the October 16 “Let’s Talk Paper: Uncoated” Webinar, Margie Dana, founder of Print Buyers International, asked Ms. Lenz for insight and information on paper basics such as:

- Uncoated paper finishes and how they can enhance your piece.
- Do you really need an acid free paper for your project?
- How much opacity do you need?
- What determines a paper’s basis weight and why you should care.

This series will continue with “Let’s Talk Paper: Coated” and “Let’s Talk Paper: Specialty.”

“Sustainability: Hands On” will be presented in November and “Letterpress” in January.

IT'S THE LITTLE ONES THAT COUNT
Gymboree takes little ones and little things very seriously. They never compromise quality, overlook a detail or settle for less than the finest craftsmanship.

So when their Janie and Jack division needed to design a direct-mail catalog that would reflect the essence of their colorful, richly embellished baby gear as well as their views on sustainability, they chose Mohawk Options.

According to Diana Firmage of Gymboree, “We were printing with an FSC-certified printer and wanted to extend our environmental efforts with a 100% recycled paper, but we didn’t want to sacrifice the detail in the clothing photographs. We also wanted the warm, soft feel of an uncoated paper stock to complement the product line and appeal to the audience’s tactile sensibilities. Mohawk Options fits the bill on all counts.”
