TIME TRAVEL MOHAWK STYLE
Cambric -- from baby’s christening gown to baby’s christening invitation
Cambric -- from the Queen’s lace collar to her personal stationery
As Mohawk Fine Papers launches Beckett Cambric’s newest attributes, we are reminded of the refined and prestigious qualities of its 16th century French cotton fabric namesake.
But advanced and enhanced Beckett Cambric is all 21st century paper -- versatile enough to make it the elite choice for business and social communications.
The characteristic even-sided linen finish with impeccable printing performance is still there, while new energized colors, heavier covers, watermarked writing weights and subtle fibered shades add new dimensions to the creative possibilities and broadens its real-life appeal with:
- Whites, neutrals, fibers, deep colors
- New 99 Bright Platinum White
- Matching envelope options
- New smaller packages for select items
- i-Tone items for digital applications
- New 11x17, 13x19 and 19x13 sheet sizes
Beckett Cambric also offers unprecedented environmental benefits. It’s FSC-certified and made carbon neutral within our production processes -- 100% of the energy used to make it is matched with windpower RECs (renewable energy credits) and VERs (verified emissions reduction credits). Plus, our 30% and 100% postconsumer recycled items are Green Seal certified.

GHG, FSC AND NOW FTC
The recent surge in consumer interest in sustainability and global warming has resulted in an avalanche of environmental claims. It’s a rapidly changing situation that can be confusing to marketers and consumers alike.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is stepping up its monitoring of false and misleading claims and has begun a regulatory review of its environmental marketing guidelines, known as the Green Guides, a full year earlier than planned.
The guides were originally developed in 1992 and outline general principles for all environmental marketing claims and provide specifics about certain green claims, such as degradability, compostability, recyclability, recycled content and ozone safety.
The Commission traditionally has held that in order to be effective, any qualifications or disclosures such as those described in the Green Guides should be sufficiently clear, prominent and understandable to prevent deception.
The guides urge consumers to evaluate environmental claims in advertising and on product labels by looking for specific information. Determine whether the claims apply to the product, the packaging or both. For example, unless the product or package contains 100 percent recycled materials, the label must tell you how much is recycled.
Products and services can claim to be "environmentally friendly," "environmentally safe," "environmentally preferable," or "eco-safe" through wording on packaging or in advertising. Look for claims that give some substance -- the additional information that explains why the product is considered environmentally friendly or has earned a special seal.
Special environmental seals and certifications have become a popular way to point to the environmental benefits of a product or package. Mohawk works closely with third-party organizations such as the Forest Stewardship Council, Green Seal and Green-e to ensure that our claims are accurate.**
To broaden understanding and further clarify the environmental attributes of Mohawk Fine Papers, we’re presenting some of the definitions and rules set forth by the groups that govern the “green” symbols and terms Mohawk uses. You may be eligible to use some of these symbols and terms on your own products.
If you have questions about how Mohawk grade lines are produced or our environmental initiatives, please visit www.mohawkpaper.com/environment.
If you have questions about using these special marks or logos, please contact us at 1 800 the mill and ask for Victoria Mason.
To review the FTC’s current Green Guides, go to www.ftc.gov/bcp/grnrule/guides980427.htm.
LOGOS ASSOCIATED WITH MOHAWK FINE PAPERS INC.
| Carbon Neutral Logos |
| |
 |
| |
Mohawk markets certain paper grades as being “made carbon neutral within our production processes.” In order to make this claim, Mohawk offsets thermal manufacturing emissions from the production of these papers with purchased Verified Emission Reduction credits (VERs) and purchases enough Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Green-e certified windpower projects to match 100% of the electricity used in our operations.
Can you use Mohawk’s Carbon Neutral logo?
1. The Carbon Neutral logo may be used on printed pieces produced on the grades in the Mohawk carbon neutral portfolio only.
2. No alteration of the logo is permissible; it must be used as provided.
Currently Mohawk’s carbon neutral stock grades include; Beckett Cambric, Beckett Concept, Beckett Expression, Beckett Enhance, Beckett Ridge, Strathmore Writing and Strathmore Script.
To obtain the logo, please e-mail us at logos@mohawkpaper.com. |
| Mohawk Windpower Marks |
| |
 |
| |
Mohawk Fine Papers purchases enough renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Green-e certified windpower projects to match 100% of the electricity used in our operations. If you would like to include the Mohawk Windpower logo, there are specific usage guidelines to follow:
1. The Windpower logo may be used on printed pieces produced on any Mohawk product.
2. No alteration of the logo is permissible; it must used as provided.
To obtain the logo, please e-mail us at logos@mohawkpaper.com. |
| Recycled Logo |
| |
 |
| |
It is highly recommended to include the percent of postconsumer recycled content in the center of the chasing arrows, directly below the chasing arrows, or in an attribution statement. Without a percentage claim, the assumption is that the product is 100% postconsumer recycled content.
To obtain the logo, please e-mail us at logos@mohawkpaper.com. |
| Environmental Calculator Icons |
| |
You can use the environmental calculator (found at www.mohawkpaper.com/environmentalcalculator) to determine the benefits of the Mohawk paper you are using. If you want to showcase the savings achieved, you may include a written attribution statement on the printed piece or display it graphically using the calculator icons along with the calculator results.
To obtain the icons, please e-mail us at logos@mohawkpaper.com. |
THIRD PARTY LOGOS
| Green Seal Logo |
| |
 |
| |
Green Seal certifies that many of Mohawk’s paper grades are made with high percentages of postconsumer recycled fiber. There is now a Green Seal logo available for customer use on certified papers. To obtain this logo, follow these steps:
1. Access the Green Seal Web site at www.greenseal.org.
2. Go to the PUBLICATIONS AND RESOURCES section, then LOGOS AND GRAPHICS section.
3. Go to DOWNLOAD GRAPHICS and follow the instructions on the Web site for registration.
4. You will be sent a link for downloading the graphics.
5. When prompted, select the appropriate logo that states: “PROUDLY PRINTED ON GREEN SEAL CERTIFIED PAPER” found at the bottom of the page. |
| FSC Labels |
| |
 |
| |
As an end-use customer, if you wish to include the FSC logo on your publication, FSC-certified paper must be purchased through an FSC-certified merchant, and printed by an FSC-certified printer. The logo file will come from the printer’s FSC Auditor.
For more information, please visit www.fscus.org.
Please note: Without a complete chain of custody, any claim about a paper’s FSC status cannot be authenticated. |
| Green-e |
| |
 |
| |
Mohawk purchases RECs from renewable energy (windpower) projects, which have been certified by Green-e. Green-e has verified that Mohawk purchases enough certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) to match 100% of the electricity used in our operations, which allows us to use the Green-e logo to represent our support of renewable energy.
The Green-e Marketplace program only allows companies to display the Green-e Marketplace Logo after they have purchased a qualifying amount of renewable energy. This program is administered by the Center for Resource Solutions, a nonprofit based in San Francisco, CA. All Green-e Marketplace requirements and documents are publicly available and can be found at
www.green-e.org. If an end-use customer wishes to display the Green-e logo on a printed piece, they will need to contact Green-e directly for the requirements. |

PUSHING THE ENVELOPE
Graphic design and direct marketing professionals have a new online resource for information about the power of print in the communications process—with a special focus on envelopes.
Created by the Envelope Manufacturers Association Foundation (EMAF), the site is divided into sections such as Designers Corner, Creative Campaigns, Trends & Technologies, Eco-Friendly Envelopes and more.
"Creative professionals are using envelopes in ways never seen before and consumers are responding," says Tonya Muse, executive director of EMAF. "Our goal is to inspire others to look at envelopes in a new way and to use them as their communications vehicle of choice."
Is that an electronic billboard running across the face of an envelope? Yep! Did someone access text and images by placing their cell phone next to the electronic sensor affixed to that envelope? Oh yeah! EMAF gives you the scoop on these emerging technologies.
EMAF offers data too like a nationwide survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, Inc., that found 60 percent of respondents thought envelopes were the safest vehicle for written communications. Just 26 percent cited e-mail or the Internet as the safest way.
You can also learn more about the “Please Recycle” campaign launched in June that encourages users and recipients of envelopes, cartons and packaging products to recycle these materials.
All this good stuff can be found at www.powerofenvelopes.org. Check it out.

HOW GOOD IS THE NEW MOHAWKPAPER.COM?
We are more than excited about our new Web site at
www.mohawkpaper.com. So you’ll forgive us a little indulgence as we borrow that great yogurt commercial metaphor to say… It’s signing-off-on-the-first-press-sheet good, it’s no-alt-charges-on-the-invoice good, it’s blends-without-banding good, it’s crossovers-with-perfect-lineup good!
For the first time, users have searchable access to the entire line of Mohawk Fine Papers with our revolutionary Paper Selection Tool. Access the tool at www.mohawkpaper.com/paper and search by:
- item number
- attributes like finish, shade, basis weight, grade or sheet size
- digital printing equipment being used
- environmental specification: ECF, PCF, FSC, Windpower RECs, Green Seal
- physical properties such as brightness, caliper, opacity, Sheffield or PPI
- proprietary technologies (i-Tone, Inxwell and Digital Imaging Surface)
You can also find where to purchase that perfect paper with the completely revamped Merchant Search Tool. Robust search options allow you to quickly and easily zoom in on the criteria that best meet your needs. Test out the new tool at www.mohawkpaper.com/distributors:
- retailers by state/province or zip code
- online-only retailers
- wholesale merchants by state/province or country
- wholesalers who offer online purchasing
And if that weren’t enough, you’ll notice all new landing pages with inspiring pops of color and eye-catching imagery. But its beauty goes into the depths of the site with new rollovers for seamless, easy navigation.
We’re already working on the next version of the Web site, so if you want to send your comments, criticisms and wish lists (or share your own metaphor about how good the new mohawkpaper.com is) please e-mail us at hilary.davis@mohawkpaper.com.
Now that’s full-ink-coverage-without-cracking good!

PUTTING LAST THINGS FIRST
Okay, confess -- How many of you open a new book, immediately turn to the last page and read the very last sentence? It’s that overwhelming urge to see how the story’s going to end. If you have that knowing little smile on your face right now, then you’ll totally love the following advice: Start your next print project where it finishes.
We focus a lot on how paper prints (and for good reason!). But to plan any printed piece and select the right paper, it’s actually best to begin where the piece ends, especially if the design calls for scoring, folding and/or diecutting.
Want to ensure your folder, packaging or invitation comes off without a hitch? The number one thing you should do is to create a dummy or mock up of the finished piece before you start designing and work closely with your printer.
There’s nothing worse than having to redo hours of work because panel sizes are wrong for a gate-folded brochure. Well … maybe having type which is too close to the trim edge after the job gets to the cutter is actually worse (ouch!).
Your printer or Mohawk paper merchant can help you get sample stock for your prototype. The client will appreciate your care and attention to detail.
Mohawk’s PDF Library offers a wealth of invaluable finishing and binding information. Some of the great tips and tidbits you’ll find are:
- The more folds, the more carefully the job must be planned. A 1/32" variation in the first fold can shift the second fold 1/16", and the third fold 1/8".
- If you are planning on anything other than a business card slit, consult with your printer in the planning stages of the project.
- The thicker the paper, the wider the score -- as wide as twice the caliper thickness of the paper.
To download the complete tip sheet, log on to www.mohawkpaper.com, click on Resources, then select PDF Library and choose the title “Binding.”

Green Seal www.greenseal.org is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment and transforming the marketplace by promoting the manufacture, purchase and use of environmentally responsible products and services. Mohawk grades that carry the Green Seal certified designation meet the strict standards for postconsumer recycled fiber content as set forth by Green Seal.

Green-e verifies Mohawk’s purchases of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and has certified the RECs to be sure that they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards.
Windpower
Mohawk supports the use of nonpolluting wind-generated electricity through the purchase of Green-e certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from windpower projects. Green-e is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy products. Green-e verifies Mohawk’s purchases of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and has certified the RECs to be sure that they meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards. Today, 100% of the electricity used to manufacture Mohawk papers is matched with RECs.
Carbon Neutral
In addition to purchasing enough Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match 100% of the electricity used in our operations, the thermal energy used in the manufacture of several grades is offset with Verified Emissions Reduction credits (VERs) that fund renewable, emission-free energy projects. Through this process, Mohawk is seeking to manufacture these papers with a net zero climate impact. Mohawk grades carrying the Carbon Neutral designation are made carbon neutral within Mohawk’s production processes. |
