strathmore screen shotMOHAWK HOSTS OHIO GOVERNOR
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland spoke to local business and community leaders about critical energy legislation on a December 7 tour of Mohawk Fine Papers’ converting facility in Saybrook, Ohio.

Ohio is facing a potential deregulation of the electric power industry that operates within the state, as occurred in New York several years ago. The governor and his supporters believe that Ohio could suffer steep price increases in electric power rates as a result.

Governor Strickland and his contingent are traveling around the state to discuss a bill (S.B. 221) that would protect current rates and promote the increased use of renewable energy such as clean coal, windpower, solar power and fuel cells.

The Governor’s travel circuit focuses on companies who need electric power rates to remain reasonable so they can continue to be competitive and maintain current levels of employment.

Mohawk Fine Papers said they were honored that Governor Strickland chose to address these important energy issues at the Saybrook facility.

In his welcoming address during the Governor’s visit, Joe O’Connor, Mohawk’s sr. vice president sales, corporate accounts and international sales, stated, “As one of the largest consumers of renewable energy within the United States, we welcome any initiatives that further spur the development of renewable emission-free resources for energy production.”

When S.B. 221 passed unanimously in the Ohio Senate at the end of October, Governor Strickland said, “Today is a major step in this bipartisan effort to ensure that we protect Ohio jobs by ensuring stable and predictable rates while bringing the jobs of the future by encouraging an advanced energy boom in our great state.”

However, Strickland now believes that the bill may face opposition in the Ohio House of Representatives and is working to get the word out and build support for his energy policy and this
key piece of legislation.

“We’re committed to the development of alternative energy sources, which present tremendous economic development opportunities,” Strickland said.

Highlighting their support for “the principles that protect consumers from spikes in our bills, establish reliability in energy production and delivery, and create Ohio jobs,” the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans joined an expanding list of organizations endorsing the energy legislation.

Ohio Manufacturing Association, Ohio AFL-CIO, Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Partners for Affordable Energy, Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies, Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks, Ohio Corn Growers, Ohio Soybean Association, Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Ohio Hospital Association, Auto Alliance, Ohio Energy Group and the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio are all supporters.

strathmore screen shotTHE POWER OF GREEN LEADERSHIP
Michelle Carpenter (right) of Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. receiving the
Green Power Leadership Award on behalf of the company.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has once again recognized Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. for its commitment to the use of renewable energy sources.  On October 22, the EPA presented Mohawk with a 2007 Green Power Leadership Award in the category of Green Power Partner of the Year.

The annual award, which was presented at the Annual National Renewable Energy Marketing Conference in Philadelphia, PA, recognizes leading national green power purchasers for their contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s green power market.

“Through our preeminent use of renewable energy products, we are doing our part to reduce our nation’s dependence on fuels that contribute to climate change,” says George Milner, senior vice president, energy, environmental and government affairs, Mohawk Fine Papers.

EPA’s Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program that encourages organizations to purchase green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use.

In 2003, Mohawk became one of the first large-scale production facilities in the United States to offset our electrical energy with a renewable wind energy certificate purchase of four million kilowatt-hours.

Since then, we have progressively increased our level of purchase to more than 100 million kilowatt-hours annually. This represents 100% of the purchased electric use for all of Mohawk’s manufacturing, converting and distribution operations in New York and Ohio.

This purchase has placed Mohawk Fine Papers on the EPA’s National Top 25 list of green power purchasers as well as its 100% Green Power Purchasers list.

Currently, 100% of the electricity we use to manufacture all of our papers is offset with Green-e certified windpower certificates. In addition, by offsetting the thermal energy emissions associated with the production of our entire Beckett Concept, Beckett Expression, Strathmore Writing and Strathmore Script product lines, these papers are effectively made carbon neutral.

digital news

strathmore screen shotTHE DIGITAL REVOLUTION CONTINUES
Markets follow what people want. This is particularly true for digital printing. Business needs for just-in-time inventory solutions and the deafening customer mantra of “quicker, better, cheaper” fueled the digital printing revolution.

It wasn’t that long ago (1995) that digital color printing made its formal debut. When digital color was introduced to printers, digital presses were not always reliable, ink and toner didn’t always stick to the paper, and the cost of consumables was so high that many printers did not initially embrace the new technology.

In the short time since, equipment advances have afforded unparalleled print quality while variable
data technology has brought the limitless possibilities of personalization and customization into the mainstream.

“Today, we are past the ‘pain’ of technical innovation and into a new generation of digital color. Digital presses are robust and reliable. Cost of entry has come down and printers of all types have gotten in the game,” explains Christopher Harrold, VP market development, emerging print technologies for Mohawk Fine Papers.

Mohawk’s early alignment with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) put us on the vanguard
of making papers for digital printing. Our continuing involvement, not only with OEMS, but with print providers and the design community, enable us to be at the forefront of making paper that meets the rigorous performance needs of the newest digital presses while providing the aesthetic options that effective design requires.

“In the past 18 months, we have built on our legacy of innovation and expanded our offerings to include heavier basis weights, new finishes, larger sheet sizes and new environmental papers,” adds Harrold. “These line extensions are in direct response to the digital printing segment who is asking for greater variety to meet their growing businesses and broader customer demands.”

“Our proprietary i-Tone technology is another example of Mohawk’s cutting-edge collaboration with
the digital printing community. It offers exceptional image transfer, greater image durability and super reliable throughput performance,” says Harrold. At the end of the day, these add up to a real value for digital printers.

Digital printing presses are feeding a forecast annual growth of 30% in color printing impressions between now and 2011, and contributing to the introduction of new applications as well.

Products like photo specialty prints, books, cards and calendars are being printed on digital presses on digitally optimized papers, creating whole new business segments and marketing opportunities.

Printers and designers alike turn to Mohawk Fine Papers for the variety of textures, weights and sizes that are engineered to run efficiently and beautifully on presses like the Indigo, iGen3 and Nexpress.

The Digital Guide from Mohawk is a great resource that enables paper specifiers to instantly see the full range of Mohawk’s 300 + papers optimized to provide offset-quality across all printing platforms.

Organizers believe this is a day for turning idealism into actual business practice as they explore solutions for making the world a better place (and further define design’s place in it).
